What a thrill to receive that postcard! We recently bought a little stone house in an Italian hill town with a 12th-century tower. I get such a feeling of calm when I go up in that tower. It was there centuries before me, and will be there long after I’m gone. It’s like stepping into deep time.
There is the big history and the little histories. I prefer the french word 'histoires' as more precise and evocative than the English word 'story'. I love the history and patina of everyday objects. I always look through old photo boxes at antique markets and pick one or two to use as bookmarks. I make up stories about them.
Have you visited museum d'Orsay? They probably got an archive on the architect. At least, if he built more things. It must be so bewildering to have hardly any information other than oral. The Vendee has an archive too but I bet you went there already. I love old, as a wife of a late archaeologist and mom of a historian I love diving into history.
It’s really nice to read about Chateau de Bourneau’s past. Well done to you for undertaking this task. Whilst it’s exciting I’m sure it’s also very time consuming but in a good way. 👏 As part of your new series, I would love to hear about The Burgundy diaries at JB’s organic farm and the history of your local area. Thank you as always for a very interesting read.
I'm sure you are aware, but there are several postcards of your chateau currently for sale on eBay. I just put in the search term Bourneau and they came up among other things. I'm guessing you already have copies of those, but it might be worth a look to see if there's something to add to your collection.

A lovely read as usual. Thank you.
I love that people have started sending you the postcards of the château that they have come across!
